Looking Out the Window
I am looking out the window; that was the first thing I remember in life. I am watching a moth that landed on the window screen as a small child. I had no idea what life would hand me after that moment. From then on life has been a wonderful color trip; even if the colors got dull sometimes. I would be a strong independent person.
I am looking through the next window. School starting was the next milestone. Being submerged in the environment wasn’t overwhelming. I have always been independent. As a child of 5 I let go of my mother’s hand and walked into the classroom without a goodbye or a second glance. It bothered her a lot more then it bothered me, a decision I do not regret.
I am discovering sports and blossoming because of it. I’m a big female and that hasn’t changed throughout my time. My size was finally useful, something I was thankful for in middle school. For once I wasn’t looked on as weird or too big as I towered over everyone else, boys included. My father always told me the competition made me more determined to succeed and beat out everyone else at everything I do. He also said competition made me aggressive. After middle school, that’s how people saw me; independent, aggressive, and determined to succeed.
I am starring through a big window now. I am going into high school and it has set me free. It is like cutting the cord that kept me attached to all the self-doubting involved in puberty and finding yourself. I am walking through the doors and ready to embarrass the way my life will change. Freshman year gave me a chance to spread the newly gained wings that had been growing and developing with my experiences. The wings started small and fleshy, much like I did. But as I got bigger and tougher, so did the wings.
I am finding myself and dumping my time in to softball and theater. I am finding lifelong friends that come like a packaged deal with the higher education. Winning my spot on the softball team was something I was most proud of; the only softball memory I cherished more than that was hitting my first homerun. I am running past second base I look up to see the ball soaring over the fence. I am crying and laughing running into home plate as my team mates, my friends, all celebrate with me in my victory.
I am going to the naval academy one day. I am determined to succeed once again in my life, just as I have been from the beginning. I am striving to reach another goal in hopes that I will one day proudly serve my country as a naval officer. The path may be rougher and less traveled by, but once again I am determined to succeed and beat out everyone else. I am looking through the window of my life, only partway through its course. I am looking through a window, looking at myself.
